5 Powerful Strategies to Boost Your Self-Esteem and Create Confidence

Our relationship with ourselves shapes the very core of our existence. How we perceive ourselves and the world, the thoughts we harbor, and the beliefs we hold can either propel us toward greatness or hinder our potential.

Building a foundation of self-esteem is the cornerstone of our emotional well-being and personal growth, a journey that empowers us to unlock our true potential and embrace a life filled with self-acceptance, confidence, and resilience.

A common theme I’ve heard from many of the women I’ve worked with over the years is the battle to like and accept themselves. I get it. I’ve been there.

I still struggle with it at times, especially when learning or trying something new and I think that’s normal. Like many things, I believe in and value “a practice”, rather than perfection, and I try to remind myself of that even when it drives me nuts.

Picture this: a world where your inner critic transforms into your greatest cheerleader, where self-doubt gives way to self-assurance, and where every step you take resonates with the rhythm of your own self-worth. Welcome to the journey of building unshakable self-esteem—a journey that begins with understanding the universal truth that how we view ourselves shapes our destiny—our interactions with the world, influencing our relationships and experiences.

5 Effective Techniques

Let’s explore five effective ways to nurture your self-esteem so you can feel good and even confident within yourself, allowing yourself to bloom and thrive, not just survive.

  • Identify Root Causes of Low Self-Esteem:

A major step towards boosting your self-esteem is identifying the root causes of your low self-worth. Traumatic experiences, critical upbringing, or past perceived failures can all contribute to these feelings. By recognizing these triggers, you can gain insight into the factors that have shaped your self-perception.

Engaging in self-reflection, perhaps through journaling or speaking with a trained and trusted therapist, can help unearth these sneaky, hidden barriers and provide clarity on the path forward.

  • Unlearn Negative Thought Patterns:

Negative self-talk can be incredibly damaging to self-esteem. Our brain has tens of thousands of thoughts per day. How many of yours might be negative, harsh or judgmental?

According to research by the National Science Foundation, it is suggested that up to 80% of the average person’s thoughts may be considered negative. Why are we so critical of ourselves? And why do we hold on to that one piece of critical feedback from 5 or 10 years ago? (It’s not just me right?!)

It's essential to become aware of these critical thoughts and challenge their validity. Start by questioning the evidence behind these thoughts – are they based on facts or assumptions? Are they rooted in the past, or can they be reframed in a more positive light? When they cycle through your mind do you hear them in your voice or someone else’s? These may have been helpful when they were what I consider “survival thoughts” but are they still needed and serving you now in the current life you’ve created?

Attempt to replace these negative thoughts with affirmations and constructive self-talk. Easy to say, harder to do. Remember, it is a practice, not an on-off switch. Over time, these positive messages will help reshape your self-image and boost your self-esteem.

  • Embrace Authenticity and Let Go of Comparison:

Comparing ourselves to others is a common yet detrimental habit that erodes self-esteem. The era of social media has intensified this tendency, making it crucial to embrace authenticity and let go of constant comparison.

Remember that everyone has their journey, and what you see on the surface may not reflect the full story. You are seeing their highlight reel, literally, through social media.

Focus on your own progress and accomplishments, celebrating your unique qualities and strengths. Recognize how you’ve grown and changed in the past year, 3 years, or 5 years. Acknowledge your bravery when you’ve tried to step out of your comfort zone, no matter the outcome. Give yourself the credit you deserve.

Engaging in mindfulness practices can further aid in staying in the present moment and reducing the urge to compare. Creating mantras that you repeat to yourself during times of struggle can also help to root you in your truth and current reality, rather than the past or comparison.

  • Establish Healthy Boundaries:

Creating healthy boundaries is a crucial aspect of nurturing self-esteem and recognizing and honoring your needs. Boundaries protect your emotional well-being and prevent others from impacting your self-worth.

Learn to communicate your needs and limits assertively, and surround yourself with individuals who respect and support your boundaries. Maybe there are people that you’re not ready to cut out of your life. Maybe you will never be ready to cut them out completely. That’s okay! Boundaries are not a one-size-fits-all. But can you create some distance from them?

By safeguarding your emotional space, you create an environment that fosters self-acceptance, self-trust, and self-respect.

  • Practice Self-Forgiveness:

Nobody is immune to mistakes or imperfections, yet holding onto guilt and self-blame can deeply impact self-esteem. To cultivate a healthier self-image, practice self-forgiveness. This doesn’t mean that you ignore and make excuses for past mistakes. Acknowledge your mistakes, learn from them, and make amends if necessary. Treat yourself with the same compassion and understanding that you extend to others.

Practice being your own best friend instead of your frenemy

Embracing self-forgiveness allows you to release the burden of past errors, put down some of your baggage, and make space for personal growth and healing.
